Throughout summer (June-September)
Not an official festival but a phenomenon: Skopelos hosts a steady stream of Mamma Mia! pilgrimages to Agios Ioannis chapel (the wedding scene). Local tavernas screen the films, host themed nights, and run weekly tribute events through summer. The tourism economy runs on it.
1 July to late September
The municipality's summer season: over 130 concerts, plays, dance and children's shows at the Nikos Kazantzakis open-air theatre by the Venetian walls, the Manos Hatzidakis theatre and the Vethlehem bastion (1 July – 21 September in 2025), with an open-air cinema and forty-odd free events. The Festival of the Walls closes it in early September. Tickets go on sale per event on the municipality site; the Kazantzakis theatre is a ten-minute walk from Lions Square.
Late July through early September
Running since 1987, Rethymno turns its Venetian past into a summer-long stage. Theatre, music and dance — Cretan Renaissance works alongside Shakespeare and Molière — staged mostly at the open-air Erofili theatre inside the Fortezza, the great fortress above the old town. Book ahead for the headline nights.

Three-month cultural festival across Symi: classical and traditional music, theatre, dance, art exhibitions in venues like Panormitis monastery, the Symi Naval Museum, and various harborside squares. Refreshingly substantive for an island this small.
weekend around 1 September · Kyra Panagia islet
The Athonite monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos on the uninhabited islet of Kyra Panagia, north-east of Alonnisos, keeps its feast with vespers on the Saturday and an Athonite-style liturgy on the Sunday around the turn of August-September; pilgrims come out by kaiki from Alonnisos, Skopelos, Skiathos and Volos. There is no tourist infrastructure on the islet, so you need a place on one of the boats organised from Patitiri and your own water and hat.
August through October
Not a single-day festival but a season. Visit any of the 24 mastichochoria during this time and you'll see the cleaned ground beneath the schinos trees waiting to catch the resin tears. Tours from the Mastic Museum in Pyrgi.
last days of August, 4 days
Four days at the end of August (27-30 August 2026, 30 Aug-1 Sep 2024) commemorating the 1828 Poros Conference where the borders of the new Greek state were drawn under Kapodistrias: lectures, Navy band concerts, theatre on the waterfront and a visiting Navy ship open to the public. Free; the concerts on the quay are the evening draw.
first Sunday after 29 August
The relic of Osios Iosif, brought from Crete when Candia fell in 1669, rests in the church of the Transfiguration in Gaitani, and on the first Sunday after 29 August the Metropolitan, clergy and village lead an evening procession with it through the streets of Gaitani, followed by a village celebration; the municipality's 2026 programme also lists a traditional dance evening in Gaitani on 3 September. Gaitani is 3 km from Zakynthos town on the Machairado road.
31 August – 1 September · Agios Symeon hill (Kamares)
The end-of-summer feast on the 476 m peak of Agios Symeon above Kamares: on the evening of 31 August people walk or drive up the track for vespers, then eat revithada and lamb at the monastery's long tables with a violin-laouto takimi. The chapel of Pantokratoras at the Platys Gialos–Chrysopigi junction celebrates the same night and is the easy-access alternative. Ask at your hotel whether the panigyras is laying on food that year — it depends on the sponsor.
Mid-September (4 days)
Annual celebration of the harvest. Tastings, music, exhibitions, cooking demos. Dates vary year to year — check the municipality's site before traveling.
weekend after 14 September
Ammouliani was settled in 1925 by refugees from the island of Marmara, who brought the cult of their 14th-century icon of Panagia Stylarini (the original is in Koutloumousiou on Athos, the copy in the island's church). The feast is kept on the Saturday-Sunday after the Exaltation of the Cross (15-16 September 2018, 16-17 September 2023) with a great vespers, a procession down to the harbour and an episcopal liturgy with the Metropolitan of Ierissos. The season is winding down, so rooms are easy and the fish tavernas still open.
early September (3–8 Sep)
The big village behind Agios Gordios, home of the Corfu folklore museum, holds its traditional panigiri in early September with the Garouna musicians and Angelos Skolarikis, food and dancing in the square. Sources disagree on the day — the Nativity of the Virgin on 8 September in the island calendars, 3 September in the 2026 municipal listing — so check corfuland the week before.
a Saturday in the second half of September
Ano Korakiana, the musical village under Pantokrator with its own philharmonic, closes its summer with a wine festival on a Saturday in mid-to-late September: new wine from the village producers, sausages and pies, and the philharmonic and a folk orchestra playing in the square. 21 September in 2024, around 13 September in 2025; similar September wine nights happen in Arillas (early Sept) and Kassiopi harbour.
second week of September, 5 days · Nimborio
A small classical festival held in Nimborio in early-mid September (8-12 September in 2026) with the Athens State Orchestra and guest soloists playing on the harbour and in the churches. Free, and the island is at its quietest; the July mandolin nights are a warm-up to it.
first Saturday of September
At the fishing shelter of Panteli, the prettiest harbour on Leros, the municipality closes the summer with a fish night (6 September in 2025, 7.30 pm): free fried fish mezedes and wine, music and dancing on the quay. Go early to get a seat on the wall.
a Saturday in September (12 September in 2026), previously held in summer · Naxos Chora
The Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Naxos gives away tonnes of the island's famous potatoes fried, boiled and baked on the harbour square in Chora, with big-name Greek singers on stage and dancing until late; 2026 was the 17th edition and its 100th anniversary. Free entry, several thousand people, so get to the square by 20:00 for a table.
a Saturday in the second half of September (21 Sep 2024, 19 Sep 2026) · Fira (caldera rim) / Nea Kameni
The municipality's re-enactment of the Minoan eruption: for over thirty years a huge fireworks display has been fired from the volcano of Nea Kameni after dark, with concerts on the caldera rim in Fira. Every terrace from Fira to Imerovigli is booked out that night, so reserve a table by mid-summer or find a free spot on the path north of Fira by 20:00.
mid-September, 3 days (17–19 Sep 2026)
Named after the Sifnos-born cookbook author Tselementes, this three-day festival run by the Sifnos Cultural Society and the municipality brings cooks from other Cyclades islands and abroad to Artemonas for evening tastings, cooking demonstrations and music; the 18th edition is 17–19 September 2026. Tastings are free once the presentations end, and the queues are long — go on the first night. Book a room early, as September is already busy on Sifnos.
first Saturday of September (5 September in 2026)
The last big glenti of the Tinos summer: Falatados fires up its still in the square, hands out fresh raki with meze, and the violins and laouta play until the early hours, free entry. Locals from all over the island come, so arrive by 21:00 and expect to park a long way down the road.
1 September · Kossoikia
On 1 September the Panikarian Riding Club 'Agios Georgios Dorganas' hosts a panigiri below the Byzantine castle of Koskina, the rocky peak above Kossoikia in the centre of the island, with Nikos Kochylas 'Ounga' and his orchestra, goat (proto) and wine from midday. Unusual setting, a short but steep walk from the parking at the foot of the hill. Wear shoes for the rocks.
1–2 September · Agios Mamas monastery (Apokrani)
On 1-2 September pilgrims head to the monastery of Agios Mamas, perched on a cliff above the Libyan Sea south of the island: vespers, then lamb offered by the shepherds, roasted and served with pilaf, dolmadakia and fried potatoes to 400-plus people by a chain of volunteers, with the Perselis family playing the old Kasiot tunes. Many stay overnight in the monastery cells. The road is rough; a 4x4 or a lift from a local helps.
1–2 September
The shepherds' saint gets one of the last big feasts of the Skyrian summer on 1-2 September at the chapel of Ai-Mamas, with goat and pilaf tavles and music through the night; September is when the island empties of tourists and the panigiria are at their most local.
1–2 September · Spetses Town (Dapia)
The tiny chapel of Agios Mamas stands on the beach by the Dapia, built by a captain saved from a storm in 1850 while carrying grape must; on the evening of 1 September, after vespers, the island's horse-carriages line up and the priest blesses the horses and their drivers, and the story of the vow is retold. Ten minutes, free, and one of the most Spetsiot things you can see; it falls the week before the Armata.
2–3 September · Kontos (Agios Nektarios)
Besides his main feast on 9 November, Aegina's saint has a second, summer one: on 2 September there are vespers at 7 pm at the monastery of Agia Triada, a procession of the relics to the big church, and an all-night vigil from 10 pm to 5 am; on the 3rd the liturgy and a second procession with relics and icon at 10.30 am. The Dimos lays on extra buses from the port; if you want to sleep in a guesthouse near the monastery, book weeks ahead.
2–3 September
The island's patron, the monk Anthimos who brought the Portaitissa icon, is honoured on 3 September with a liturgy and procession through Chora. A quiet, local occasion at the end of the season.
6–7 September · Agios Sostis (Livadi)
A beach chapel feast on the little isthmus of Agios Sostis, a short drive or a 40-minute walk from Livadi: vespers on the evening of 6 September, fava and goat from the ktitores and wine on the sand, liturgy at dawn on the 7th. September water is at its warmest, so people swim before and after. Parking is a handful of spaces on the track — walk if you can.
7–8 September
Two-day pilgrimage to the chapel atop Mount Kalamos (460m) — a vertical limestone monolith on the island's east coast, second only to Gibraltar in Mediterranean profile. Pilgrims walk up overnight; an all-night service ends with sunrise above the Aegean. The most spectacular small-island pilgrimage in Greece.
7–8 September
The beach hamlet of Vitali on the north-east coast holds the last panigiri of the Andros summer on 8 September, with a liturgy at the chapel of the Virgin and food, wine and music by the sea. Reached by a long dirt road from Vourkoti or Ano Agios Petros; go with a car you do not mind scratching.
7–8 September · Faneromeni, south Antiparos
The whitewashed chapel of Panagia Faneromeni on the wild southern tip of Antiparos can only be reached by caique or a long dirt track, and on 7-8 September the whole island goes out there for the Nativity of the Virgin with food and wine after the liturgy. Ask at the harbour a day or two ahead about boats leaving for the feast.
7–8 September · Poulariani (east Astypalaia)
The Nativity of the Virgin is kept at the cave chapel of Panagia Poulariani on the eastern arm of the island beyond Vathy, with vespers on the 7th and a small feast with violins after. Reached by dirt road or boat from Vathy; ask locally about lifts.
7–8 September
The country chapel of Panagia Leiapyrgousaina near Chalkeios, south of Chios town, keeps the Nativity of the Virgin with festive vespers at 19:00 on the eve and matins, bread-blessing and liturgy from 07:00 on 8 September. The Nativity is also kept the same day in Pityos, Lithi, Elata, Leptopoda and other villages; this one is the closest to town.
7–8 September
For the Nativity of the Virgin the Messara village of Agios Thomas walks out to the 14th-century chapel of Panagia Karkadiotissa by the river for vespers on the evening of 7 September, followed by a glenti; it is the last big panigiri of the Heraklion season. The chapel is a short walk from the village; bring a torch for the way back.
7–8 September
The women's monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos at Zourva, on the far eastern tip of Hydra, keeps its feast on 7-8 September with vespers on the eve and a liturgy with a representative of the Metropolitan. It is a two-hour walk from town over the ridge or a water taxi to the cove below; the nuns offer coffee and sweets, and September is the best month to do the path.
7–8 September
On 7-8 September the church at Agia Theodoti beach and the chapel of the Virgin inside the Byzantine fort of Paleokastro both celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin, with vespers, a shared meal and music. Paleokastro is a steep 20-minute climb from the road, so most people go to Agia Theodoti in the evening and up to the castle for the morning liturgy.
7–8 September · Kathara Monastery (above Perachori)
The Nativity of the Virgin is the feast of Ithaca's patron icon at the Kathara monastery, 600 m up above Vathy: great vespers on the evening of 7 September, hierarchical liturgy on the 8th with the Metropolitan of Lefkada and Ithaca, and a meal offered to pilgrims by the monastery. Come for the view from the bell tower as much as the service; the road up from Perachori is paved but slow.
7–8 September
Mesochori, a car-free village of stepped lanes on the west coast, celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin at Panagia Mesochoritissa, the church built over the village spring, with vespers on the 7th and a feast with lyra and laouto on the square. Volada also feasts on 8 September. Park at the top of the village and walk down.
7–8 September · Ellerou monastery
The Nativity of the Virgin is kept at the isolated monastery of Panagia Ellerou in the island's interior, where families still use the old shepherds' cells (mitata) around the church to sleep over. Vespers on the 7th, then food, wine and dancing. Ask in Fry about lifts; there is no bus.
7–8 September
Kardamena's parish feast on 7-8 September is the one night the resort belongs to the locals: vespers at the Panagia church, then a glendi with island music on the square. In early October the same village holds its smelt (marida) festival with free fried fish by the harbour.

Kanala's second big feast, for the Nativity of the Virgin, with vespers on 7 September and liturgy on the 8th at the shrine, plus the Kalolivadiani chapel at Kalo Livadi celebrating the same day. Quieter than 15 August and with September prices, it's the better pick if you want the Kanala atmosphere without the crush — the beach below is still warm enough to swim.

Plaka's own feast, for the Nativity of the Virgin at the cliff-edge church of Panagia Korfiatissa: vespers on the evening of 7 September, then an island panigiri with live music in the central square of Plaka. Come early enough to watch the sunset from the church terrace first; the square is small and fills fast, and the whole village is on foot.
7–8 September
Marmara, the farming village next to Marpissa, celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin at its church of Panagia Faneromeni with a liturgy on 8 September and a panigiri the evening before, with food, wine and island dancing in the square. A good, unhurried September feast once the crowds have gone.

On 7-8 September pilgrims climb the 300-odd steps to the tiny monastery of Panagia Tsambika on its rock above Kolymbia; childless couples traditionally go up barefoot, and children born after a vow are named Tsambikos or Tsambika, which is why you meet so many of them on Rhodes. Vespers on the evening of the 7th, liturgy on the 8th, then food and music down at the lower monastery by the road. Go early; the car park by the road fills by mid-morning.
7–8 September
Samos's oldest monastery (1566), above the mountain village of Vourliotes, keeps its patronal feast with a hierarchical vespers on the evening of 7 September and liturgy and icon procession on the 8th, presided by the Metropolitan of Samos. Pilgrims from the whole island come; traditionally boiled meat with wheat is shared afterwards and the village square below fills for music. Narrow road, so park in Vourliotes and walk the last stretch.
7–8 September
The 17th-century Moni Vrysis below Exambela, with its small ecclesiastical museum, celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin with vespers and a monastery-table panigiri on the evening of 7 September — chickpea soup, lamb, wine and a takimi in the courtyard. It's a ten-minute walk down from Exambela village; a good one to combine with a September stay in Apollonia when the island has calmed down.
7–8 September · Achilli
The Nativity of the Virgin is kept on 7-8 September at Panagia Lymbiani and on the 8th at the cave chapel of Panagia Spiliotissa above Achilli bay south of the Chora, with tavles after the liturgy. Good late-season option: warm sea, empty beaches and the last violins of the year.
7–8 September
On 7-8 September the Catholic villages of the interior celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin: Pagos and Chroussa with a liturgy and a square panigiri with violin, laouto and local food, and Lotos and Voulias (Kini) at their own chapels of the Virgin over the following days. Pagos also has a well-known island evening in late July.
8 September
The single most spectacular naval festival in Greece. Reenacts the 1822 Battle of Spetses — a wooden replica of the Ottoman flagship is set ablaze in the harbour, with fireworks. Hundreds of thousands attend; book accommodation months ahead.
13–14 September
The village is named for its church of the Holy Cross, so 13-14 September is Stavros's own feast: vespers, liturgy and a smaller repeat of the August panigiri with local food, music and dancing, at the end of the season when only islanders and a few stragglers are left.
13–14 September
The Exaltation of the Cross is kept in Chora on the evening of 13 September with a glenti in Plateia Agiou Nikolaou — food and wine put out by residents, violin and laouto and the locals' own dancing. September is the sweet spot on Folegandros: warm sea, empty beaches, and this is the last feast before the island winds down.
13–14 September
For the Exaltation of the Cross the parish of Agkairia holds its liturgy with kerasmata afterwards, and in the evening the dance groups perform and the tables come out down on the seafront at Aliki. It is the last of the summer panigiria in the south of the island.

Once 'the largest panigiri in the area', the Stavros feast of Mytilinioi has been revived by the village association and is held on the eve, 13 September, from 20:00 in the central square with the village's traditional musicians. The Cross is also kept on 14 September at Mavratzaioi and the Timiou Stavrou monastery nearby. Late-season, mostly Samians.
13–14 September
Emporio, the big medieval village in the south, celebrates the Exaltation of the Cross on 13-14 September with a liturgy and a panigiri in the square: local wine, food, music and dancing. Mid-September is grape-harvest time, so the wine is new and the village is in a good mood.
13–14 September
Two Stavros feasts on the evening of 13 September: at Fasolou by Faros beach, and at Choni on the road to Cheronissos. Both follow the Sifnos formula — vespers, then the panigyras's revithada and lamb at long tables, violin and laouto. Faros is the one to choose if you're without a car; Choni is quieter and more local.
13–14 September
For the Exaltation of the Cross the sponsoring family gives an evening meal for the village on 13 September and, as with every Sikinos feast, takes the icon home for a year. It's a quiet, entirely local evening at the end of the season — the sort of thing you stumble on rather than plan around, but worth knowing if you're on the island in mid-September.
15 September
Agios Vissarion is Meganisi's protector and 15 September is the island's own feast day: the Metropolitan of Lefkada usually comes over to lead the liturgy in Vathy, followed by a procession of the icon to the harbour and a reception. The island has emptied of tourists by then, so it is the most Meganisiot day of the year; ferries from Nydri run as normal.
16–17 September
The spring village of Mersini, with its plane tree and view down to Livadi beach, celebrates its church of Agia Sofia in mid-September with a liturgy and a meal and music in the courtyard. The church calendar puts Agia Sofia on 17 September, though local listings give 19 September, so confirm at the port when you arrive.
17 September
The 'big panigiri' of Monokampi, a village under plane trees on the south coast road between Agios Kirykos and Manganitis, on 17 September from midday: local meat, Ikarian wine and the Aganta band in 2025. September is when Ikarians themselves go to panigiria, so this is one of the most authentic on the calendar. Kampos on the north side also keeps Agia Sofia this day.
23–24 September
The evening before the island's great feast of the Myrtidiotissa (24 September) the port village of Agia Pelagia holds its annual chorós on the waterfront from 9pm, with a live band, food and dancing, before everyone drives across to the Myrtidia monastery for the vigil and morning liturgy. Late September is warm and the island is quiet again; a good weekend to see Kythira as the Kythirans do.
23–24 September
The last panigiri of the Patmos summer: on the evening of 23 September boats cross from Agriolivado to the little chapel of Agia Thekla on the islet opposite for vespers, treats, and then food and song on the beach. Small and very local.
23–24 September
Kamari's parish church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa celebrates on 24 September, with vespers the evening before and a panigiri with wine, food, music and dancing for the beach village at the end of its season. Easy to reach by bus from Fira.
24 September
Kythira's biggest day. The miraculous icon — found in a myrtle bush in the 14th century — draws over a thousand pilgrims to the Myrtidia monastery. After the 9am liturgy the icon is carried in procession around the grounds behind the Potamos brass band, with sweets and coffee handed out to everyone. Also marked on 15 August.
25–26 September
The last big feast of the Milos season, for Agios Ioannis Theologos 'Siderianos' at the old monastery in the wild south-west (Chalakas). The icon is brought over from the Korfiatissa church with honours, and the village and the church committee lay on a glenti with island musicians in the courtyard; the party is usually held on the Saturday nearest the feast (20 Sept 2025, 21 Sept 2024) with vespers on 25 September, so check milosvoice.gr for the exact night. Hundreds come, including Kimolians; the road in is unpaved for the last stretch.
25–26 September
The hill chapel of Agios Ioannis at Diakofti celebrates the Theologian on 26 September (and again on 8 May) with a family-run panigiri: vespers, then lamb, wine and tsambouna music for whoever climbs up. September on Mykonos is when the old island reappears, and this is a good place to see it.
25–26 September
The fishing village of Apollonas at the northern tip celebrates St John the Theologian twice, on 8 May and 26 September, with grilled meat and seafood, local wine, music and dancing by the harbour. The September one is the last panigiri of the Naxos season, with the tourists gone and the water still warm.

The monastery of Agios Ioannis Theologos just below Nikia, the village on the crater rim, has its feast on 25-26 September: vespers, food in the courtyard and dancing to violin and laouto. Late season, so a good excuse to see the volcano with few people around.

Dryos on the south-east coast keeps the autumn feast of St John the Theologian (26 September) with a panigiri on the evening of the 25th from about 21:00: local food, wine and island music and dance groups by the harbour. The same chapel also celebrates on 8 May with a smaller gathering.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar.
