Feast of Agios Riginos, Skopelos Town

24–25 February

The patron of Skopelos, a 4th-century bishop beheaded on the island, is honoured on 24-25 February: on the eve his relics are carried from the church of Christos in the Chora to the monastery of Agios Riginos 4 km south-west, with a stop at the old Ai-Riginaki bridge where he is said to have been martyred, and after the liturgy the faithful hand out local sweets (the Skopelos loukoumi and amygdalota). It is the one day the whole island is on its feet in winter; ferries from Volos still run but hotels are mostly shut, so book a room in the Chora in advance.

Mamma Mia! summer (informal)

Throughout summer (June-September)

Not an official festival but a phenomenon: Skopelos hosts a steady stream of Mamma Mia! pilgrimages to Agios Ioannis chapel (the wedding scene). Local tavernas screen the films, host themed nights, and run weekly tribute events through summer. The tourism economy runs on it.

Vigil of Agios Ioannis Prodromos, Kampos (Skopelos)

23–24 June · Kampos (Skopelos Town)

The small women's monastery of Prodromos a few km from the Chora keeps an all-night vigil on the eve of 24 June and offers food to those who stay, in the Athonite manner the island's monasteries follow. The same dependency's chapel of Agios Ioannis sto Kampo (not the Mamma Mia rock chapel at Kastri) holds vespers on 28 August and liturgy on the 29th for the Beheading. Quiet, candle-lit and worth it if you are on the island anyway; take a car, there is no bus.

Gastronomy and Tradition Festival, Glossa

late July, 1 evening

An evening in the schoolyard of Glossa (31 July 2026, and a previous edition in 2025) built around the village's three crops, almonds, plums and olives: a chef cooks local recipes live, there is a home-recipe competition, dances from the Glossa association and a local band, run by the Association of Glossa natives with the Region of Thessaly and the municipality. Free; go for the plum-and-almond sweets and stay for the dancing.

Rebetiko Festival (Days of Rebetiko), Skopelos Town

early July, 4 days

Four nights of rebetiko concerts and talks in the Chora, run by the island's Cultural and Folklore Society under the Ministry of Culture: 1-4 July in 2025, 7-10 July in 2026, with stages below Panagitsa tou Pyrgou on the harbour, the Vakratsa mansion and the KAPI club. Free or cheap, and the crowd is a mix of Athenian rebetiko fans and locals. Early July is still pre-peak, so it is a good week to combine with the Agioi Anargyroi dance evening on 1 July.

Skopelitiki Evdomada (Skopelos Week), Skopelos Town

15-20 August, 4-6 evenings

The Cultural and Folklore Society's week of island customs held around Dekapentavgoustos: a trachanas night where shepherds cook the sour wheat soup in cauldrons at the municipal café, a re-enactment of a Skopelitiko wedding that ends with a full glenti with orchestra, food and wine on the harbour (10 EUR in 2026), and an evening of making and tasting the island's spiral tiropita. Dates were 25-27 August in 2025 and 15-20 August in 2026, so check the programme; the wedding night sells out.

Panigiri

Panigiri of Sotiros (Transfiguration), Skopelos Town and Metamorfosi Monastery

5–6 August

On 5 August the 16th-century monastery of Metamorfosi tou Sotiros above the Chora holds festive vespers with artoklasia at 8 pm, often with Athonite monks concelebrating, and the liturgy at 7.30 next morning. On the evening of the 6th the Dimos Skopelou stages the town's big open-air panigiri on the harbour front / KAPI courtyard with a name nisiotika singer (Nasia Konitopoulou in 2025), free to attend. Go up to the monastery for the vespers and come down to the port for the dancing.

Panigiri

Panigiri of Panagia (15 August), Glossa and Loutraki

The north of the island celebrates Dekapentavgoustos twice over: the municipality's panigiri on the little harbour of Loutraki (15 August in 2025, the 16th in 2026, with a local singer and dancing by the water), and since 2025 a revived all-night glenti in the central square of Glossa village above it, where the music went on until 6 am. Between them there is a shuttle-worthy 3 km of hairpins, so decide where you will sleep; rooms in Glossa are few and go early in August.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar.
