Holocaust of Kasos commemoration

7 June

Memorial of the 1824 destruction of the island by Egyptian-Ottoman forces. Solemn, not festive — but historically the most important date in the Kasos calendar.

Panigiri

Panigiri of Agia Marina, Agia Marina

16–17 July

The largest village on Kasos feasts its namesake saint on 16-17 July with a glendi of lyra and laouto, free wine and food on the square. Agia Marina also hosts the Transfiguration (6 August) and Holy Cross (14 September) feasts. Fifteen minutes' walk uphill from Fry.

Panigiri

Panigiri of Pera Panagia, Panagia village

14–15 August

The biggest day of the Kasos year: the whole island, plus 2,000-odd diaspora Kasiots, gathers at the church in the village of Panagia. Kasiot dolmadakia (tiny stuffed vine leaves), stewed meat with cinnamon pilaf and fried potatoes are served free, and sousta and zervos dancing to lyra and laouto runs from midday to dawn. Ferries and the tiny plane fill up; book in June.

Panigiri

Panigiri of Agios Mamas, Apokrani monastery

1–2 September · Agios Mamas monastery (Apokrani)

On 1-2 September pilgrims head to the monastery of Agios Mamas, perched on a cliff above the Libyan Sea south of the island: vespers, then lamb offered by the shepherds, roasted and served with pilaf, dolmadakia and fried potatoes to 400-plus people by a chain of volunteers, with the Perselis family playing the old Kasiot tunes. Many stay overnight in the monastery cells. The road is rough; a 4x4 or a lift from a local helps.

Panigiri of Panagia Ellerou

7–8 September · Ellerou monastery

The Nativity of the Virgin is kept at the isolated monastery of Panagia Ellerou in the island's interior, where families still use the old shepherds' cells (mitata) around the church to sleep over. Vespers on the 7th, then food, wine and dancing. Ask in Fry about lifts; there is no bus.

Panigiri of Agios Spyridon, Fry

11–12 December

The port town's own winter panigiri, on 11-12 December at the church of Agios Spyridon in Fry, with vespers and a glendi indoors with lyra, sweets and wine. One of the few times to see Kasos with only Kasiots on it.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar. If you know better, the feedback button exists for exactly this.
