Ios claims Homer's grave — tradition puts it at Plakotos in the north — and honours him each May with the Omiria, the island's main cultural festival under UNESCO's auspices: performances, exhibitions, concerts and contests. A quieter, older side of an island better known for its summer party.
23–24 June · Pyrgos (Agios Ioannis monastery)
On the evening of 23 June Ios climbs to the little monastery of Agios Ioannis at Pyrgos, on the summit above Chora, for the Klidonas: vespers, then bonfires, meze and wine from the association and violins until late, with the whole island laid out beneath you. Take the dirt road by car and walk the last stretch, or hike up from Chora before dusk.
14–15 August
Ios's biggest feast — the Dormition, celebrated at the cliff-edge church of Panagia Gremiotissa crowning Chora. Morning liturgy, then the whole village tips into eating, dancing and music until dawn, with fireworks over the harbour. The walk up through the white lanes at dusk is half the experience.
20–21 August
The chapel of the Virgin at Mersinia, in the countryside north of Chora, holds its own feast on 21 August with a vespers the evening before, food and wine offered by the families who look after the church, and music. A small rural panigiri; ask in Chora for directions and a lift.
28–29 August
For the Beheading of St John, two chapels on the wild east coast, at Psathi bay and above Kalamos beach, hold their feasts on the same night of 28-29 August: meat soup and fasolada are ladled out free, with wine and traditional music by the sea. Both are at the end of long dirt roads; go with a car and a torch, and stay for the dawn liturgy if you can.
7–8 September
On 7-8 September the church at Agia Theodoti beach and the chapel of the Virgin inside the Byzantine fort of Paleokastro both celebrate the Nativity of the Virgin, with vespers, a shared meal and music. Paleokastro is a steep 20-minute climb from the road, so most people go to Agia Theodoti in the evening and up to the castle for the morning liturgy.
5–6 December
The chapel of the sailors' saint at Koumbara beach, west of the port, is where Ios celebrates 6 December: liturgy, then food and wine for the handful of islanders who are around in winter. Worth knowing if you are on Ios out of season.
Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar.
