19–20 July
The monastery of Profitis Ilias on Santorini's highest point above Pyrgos celebrates on 19-20 July with a vespers on the eve and the liturgy on the day, followed by kerasmata for pilgrims and a panigiri down in Pyrgos with local wine, food and music. The road up is narrow and parking at the top is scarce; go early or walk up from Pyrgos.
Late August (typically last week)
Classical music and arts festival hosted at the 17th-century Megaron Gyzi mansion in Fira. Chamber concerts, recitals, exhibitions. Quiet, refined antithesis to Santorini's mass-tourism reputation. Limited tickets — book ahead.
5–6 August
Pyrgos keeps an old custom for the Transfiguration: on the eve the village boys 'steal' basil plants from the girls' courtyards to decorate the dome of the church of Christ, and after the liturgy on 6 August there is a panigiri in the kastro lanes with wine, food and music. One of the few Santorini feasts that still feels like a village affair.
14–15 August · Mesa Gonia (Episkopi Gonias)
The 11th-century Byzantine church of Panagia Episkopi at Mesa Gonia hosts the island's largest panigiri: on the evening of 14 August big cauldrons of fava and beans are cooked in the courtyard, and after the liturgy on the 15th everyone eats free and dances to live island music with locals and summer visitors mixed together. Park along the Kamari road and walk up; it gets very busy after 21:00.
a Saturday in the second half of September (21 Sep 2024, 19 Sep 2026) · Fira (caldera rim) / Nea Kameni
The municipality's re-enactment of the Minoan eruption: for over thirty years a huge fireworks display has been fired from the volcano of Nea Kameni after dark, with concerts on the caldera rim in Fira. Every terrace from Fira to Imerovigli is booked out that night, so reserve a table by mid-summer or find a free spot on the path north of Fira by 20:00.
13–14 September
Emporio, the big medieval village in the south, celebrates the Exaltation of the Cross on 13-14 September with a liturgy and a panigiri in the square: local wine, food, music and dancing. Mid-September is grape-harvest time, so the wine is new and the village is in a good mood.
23–24 September
Kamari's parish church of Panagia Myrtidiotissa celebrates on 24 September, with vespers the evening before and a panigiri with wine, food, music and dancing for the beach village at the end of its season. Easy to reach by bus from Fira.
a weekend in mid-October (16-18 Oct 2026) · Fira / Oia
The island's main sports weekend: a 1.5 km open-water swim from the volcano across the caldera to Fira's old port, and trail runs of 5, 10 and 15 km along the caldera path between Fira and Oia. Entries open in spring and the swim sells out; it is also a cheap, warm time to see the island.
Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar.
