Symi Festival

July to September, most nights in August · Gialos / Chorio

Three-month cultural festival across Symi: classical and traditional music, theatre, dance, art exhibitions in venues like Panormitis monastery, the Symi Naval Museum, and various harborside squares. Refreshingly substantive for an island this small.

Panigiri of Agia Marina islet

16–17 July

Boats shuttle from Pedi and Gialos to the chapel islet of Agia Marina off Symi's north-east tip for vespers on 16 July and a feast on the islet with fried fish and wine. One of the prettiest panigiri settings in the Dodecanese; go over before sunset.

Panigiri of Agios Panteleimon, Nanou

26–27 July

The little monastery above Nanou beach on the east coast has its feast on 26-27 July with a vespers and a glendi with fish, wine and song. Nanou is reached by boat from Gialos or a long walk; the taxi boats run late on the feast night.

Panigiri of Sotiris (Transfiguration), Nimborio

5–6 August

The Transfiguration is kept at Nimborio, the bay a half-hour walk west of Gialos, with vespers on the 5th and a feast in the courtyard with fried fish, salads and wine, and Symiot music; it is also the 'Ag. Sotiris' night listed within the Symi Festival programme. Walk back along the coast road with a torch, or take a water taxi.

Panigiri of Panagia, Nimos islet

23–24 August

On 23-24 August the caiques go north from Gialos to the uninhabited islet of Nimos for the feast of the Panagia (Ypakoi/Alithini chapels) with fish, wine and music on the shore. Boats are the only way; ask at the Gialos harbour on the 23rd.

Feast of Panormitis (Taxiarchis Michail)
Religious

Feast of Panormitis (Taxiarchis Michail)

7–8 November

Patron saint feast at the cliffside Monastery of Archangel Michael at Panormitis bay. Pilgrims arrive from across the Dodecanese; the saint is said to grant wishes left in messages tied to floating bottles.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar. If you know better, the feedback button exists for exactly this.
