Carnival

Mostra of Thymiana (carnival)

14–16 March

Chios's famous carnival custom, listed in the national intangible-heritage register: on Carnival Sunday (the last Sunday before Clean Monday) Thymiana, just south of Chios town, re-enacts the villagers' victory over pirates with the 'talimi' sword dance and a procession of masked 'Mostres', now combined with a float parade. Run by the MEOTH association over the last carnival weekend, with thousands attending including visitors from Turkey. Go early, the village roads are closed.

Carnival

Clean Monday panigiri, Nenita

15 March

The mastic village of Nenita in the south ends carnival with a traditional Clean Monday panigiri in the village square, organised by the 'Vokaria' cultural association with a live folk orchestra, Lenten food and dancing. Nenita also holds a summer panigiri for Agioi Anargyroi (1 July) and an early-August village feast.

Rouketopolemos (Rocket War)

1 May

In Vrondados, two rival parishes — Agios Markos and Panagia Erithiani — fire tens of thousands of homemade rockets at each other's bell towers across a 400m valley, while the midnight Easter liturgies continue inside both churches. Possibly the most spectacular Easter event in Greece. Watch from the slopes of Mount Aepos for safety.

Mountain & Livestock Festival, Pityos

last weekend of July, 3 days (24-26 Jul 2026)

The cultural association 'O Makellos' of Pityos, a stone village in the hills of north-central Chios, runs a three-day festival of mountain life: stalls of local products, cheese-making and pasta-making demonstrations (herisia, chontro), workshops for children, shadow theatre and a traditional orchestra each night from 19:00 to midnight. Seventh edition in 2026; food and drink from the association's stalls.

Pilgrimage feast of Agia Markella, Volissos

21–22 July

The feast of Chios's patron saint at her seaside shrine and monastery below Volissos in the Amani region is the island's biggest religious event: thousands walk the roughly 50 km from Chios town overnight on 21 July, sleep on the beach and attend the liturgy on the 22nd, visiting the rocks where holy water springs. The municipality issues walking guidelines each year (left side of the road, torch, water) and bans wild camping; drive slowly, the road is full of pilgrims, and refuel in Vrontados.

August through October

Not a single-day festival but a season. Visit any of the 24 mastichochoria during this time and you'll see the cleaned ground beneath the schinos trees waiting to catch the resin tears. Tours from the Mastic Museum in Pyrgi.

Souma Festival, Leptopoda

a Sunday in mid-August (18 Aug 2024), from 11:00

Souma is the fig-based spirit of northern Chios, and the tiny Amani village of Leptopoda has celebrated it for 15+ years with a Sunday festival: unlimited souma poured from the village stills, mezedes, and island music from late morning. There is no square, so 2,000-plus visitors spread through the lanes, on balconies and roofs. Get there before noon and arrange a driver.

Boat panigiri of Agios Stefanos islet, Elata

1–2 August

For the feast of St Stephen's relics (2 August) the mastic village of Elata celebrates on the islet of Agios Stefanos off Agia Irini bay: boats leave the little harbour of Agia Irini around 18:00 on the eve for vespers and a gathering at the chapel. Small, unusual and weather-dependent; bring water and something for the boatman.

Panigiri

Eve-of-the-Dormition panigiri, Sidirounta

14–15 August

Sidirounta, a hillside village on the west coast road to Volissos with a wide view over the Aegean, holds a big open-air panigiri on the night of 14 August from 22:00 with a live orchestra (Makrokanis-Tzikas in 2026), free entry and food from the village taverna. Good stop if you are heading to the western beaches; the road back to town is dark and winding.

Nine-days-of-the-Virgin panigiri, Nea Potamia

23 August

The 'Enniamera' (ninth day after the Dormition, 23 August) is kept as a village panigiri in the square of Nea Potamia in north-eastern Chios, organised by the local association with a traditional orchestra (Poupaloi-Pipidis in 2024). A quieter alternative to the mid-August crowds, popular with families from Chios town.

Feast of Panagia Leiapyrgousaina, Chalkeios

7–8 September

The country chapel of Panagia Leiapyrgousaina near Chalkeios, south of Chios town, keeps the Nativity of the Virgin with festive vespers at 19:00 on the eve and matins, bread-blessing and liturgy from 07:00 on 8 September. The Nativity is also kept the same day in Pityos, Lithi, Elata, Leptopoda and other villages; this one is the closest to town.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar.
