Panigiri of Panagia tou Vounou, above Platys Gialos

24–25 March · Platys Gialos road

The hilltop monastery of Panagia tou Vounou, with the best view over Platys Gialos bay, celebrates the Annunciation with vespers and a Lenten panigiri on the evening of 24 March — revithada and cod rather than lamb, since it falls in Lent, plus the violin-laouto takimi. Out of season the island is quiet and this is a genuinely local night; it's on the Apollonia–Platys Gialos road, so easy to reach by car.

Sifnos's biggest festival, at the cliff-top monastery. The icon is paraded; tavernas serve free chickpea stew and lamb to all comers.

Panigiri of Taxiarchis, Vathy

12–13 July

Vathy's whitewashed Taxiarchis monastery right on the beach celebrates twice a year; the summer feast is on the evening of 12 July (Synaxis of Archangel Gabriel), with vespers, then revithada and braised lamb at the monastery tables and a violin-and-laouto takimi. Same night the chapel of Ai-Silivestros on the Cheronissos road also celebrates. The village has a small car park; many people come by boat from Kamares.

Panigiri of Agia Marina, Flambouro

16–17 July · Flambouro (Apollonia area)

The Agia Marina that Sifniots go to is the chapel at Flambouro, behind Profitis Ilias Apsilos: vespers and a morning panigiri on 17 July, with the usual chickpea soup and lamb from the panigyras. Kamares (18 July) and Vathy (19 July) hold their own smaller Agia Marina feasts on the following nights, so you can catch one each evening. It's reached on foot from the Apollonia–Profitis Ilias path; wear proper shoes.

Panigiri of Profitis Ilias Apsilos (mountaintop monastery)

19–20 July · Profitis Ilias summit, above Apollonia/Katavati

Pilgrimage on foot to the highest point of the island (680m), where a small chapel sits on the summit. Locals walk up before dawn.

Panigiri of Agios Panteleimon, Cheronissos

26–27 July

The fishing hamlet at the island's northern tip celebrates Agios Panteleimon on the evening of 26 July at the beachside church of Agios Polykarpos, with chickpea soup and lamb at tables by the water and a takimi playing into the night; a second, smaller feast is held the same night at Agios Charalambos on the road in. The road from Artemonas is long and winding — go early, eat at the taverna, and don't plan on driving back fast.

Panigiri of Ai-Giannis Nistevtis, Faros

28–29 August

For the Beheading of St John (29 August) Sifnos has five Ai-Giannis feasts on the evening of the 28th — Choni, Mavro Chorio, Siderou, Mangana — but the easiest for visitors is Ai-Giannis 'the Faster' at Faros, a chapel above the beach, which does its panigiri on the morning of the 29th after liturgy. Being a fast day, the panigyras serves the Lenten menu: cod with cabbage salad instead of lamb, alongside the revithada.

Panigiri of Agios Symeon (summit chapel), above Kamares

31 August – 1 September · Agios Symeon hill (Kamares)

The end-of-summer feast on the 476 m peak of Agios Symeon above Kamares: on the evening of 31 August people walk or drive up the track for vespers, then eat revithada and lamb at the monastery's long tables with a violin-laouto takimi. The chapel of Pantokratoras at the Platys Gialos–Chrysopigi junction celebrates the same night and is the easy-access alternative. Ask at your hotel whether the panigyras is laying on food that year — it depends on the sponsor.

Cycladic Gastronomy Festival 'Nikolaos Tselementes', Artemonas

mid-September, 3 days (17–19 Sep 2026)

Named after the Sifnos-born cookbook author Tselementes, this three-day festival run by the Sifnos Cultural Society and the municipality brings cooks from other Cyclades islands and abroad to Artemonas for evening tastings, cooking demonstrations and music; the 18th edition is 17–19 September 2026. Tastings are free once the presentations end, and the queues are long — go on the first night. Book a room early, as September is already busy on Sifnos.

Panigiri of Panagia Vrysiani (Nativity of the Virgin), Exambela

7–8 September

The 17th-century Moni Vrysis below Exambela, with its small ecclesiastical museum, celebrates the Nativity of the Virgin with vespers and a monastery-table panigiri on the evening of 7 September — chickpea soup, lamb, wine and a takimi in the courtyard. It's a ten-minute walk down from Exambela village; a good one to combine with a September stay in Apollonia when the island has calmed down.

Panigiri of Timios Stavros, Faros and Choni

13–14 September

Two Stavros feasts on the evening of 13 September: at Fasolou by Faros beach, and at Choni on the road to Cheronissos. Both follow the Sifnos formula — vespers, then the panigyras's revithada and lamb at long tables, violin and laouto. Faros is the one to choose if you're without a car; Choni is quieter and more local.
