Samos
3.3/5Pythagoras, Hera and the greenest island in the eastern Aegean
The Heraion sanctuary, the Pythagorion harbour, Mount Kerkis and the best beaches of the south coast.
Why 3.3: exceptional history and architecture and good value, and nothing that actively lets it down.
Forested mountains, Muscat vineyards, and the Turkish coast a kilometre off the east shore. Samos is the birthplace of Pythagoras and Epicurus, and home to the Heraion — one of the most important ancient sanctuaries in Greece — but the surprise is the landscape: green, wooded and nothing like the rocky Cyclades nearby. The 5.5-metre kouros from the Heraion stands in the Vathy archaeological museum, one of the finest in the Aegean, and the Eupalinos Tunnel at Pythagorion is the other thing worth building a day around. Psili Ammos, fine white sand near the southeastern tip, is the best beach; Potami, where a river meets the sea below a gorge with Byzantine ruins and a waterfall a thirty-minute walk up, is the more interesting one. Nightlife is thin — 3.0 — and you need a car, since this is 477 km² with three separate ports. Come in September, when the Muscat harvest begins at the Pythagorion cooperative, the sea is at its warmest and the charters have gone — less famous than it deserves to be.
Good for
- Anyone serious about antiquity — the Heraion, the Eupalinos Tunnel and the 5.5-metre kouros in the Vathy museum
- Walkers who want green — forested mountains, the wine villages of Manolates and Vourliotes, the gorge walk above Potami
- September travellers — the Muscat harvest starts at the Pythagorion cooperative, the sea is warmest and the charters have gone
Maybe skip if
- If you want nightlife — it is thin on Samos, and thinner still in the mountain villages
- If you won't rent a car — this is 477 km² with three separate ports and nothing joins up without one
Getting there
Domestic + summer charter airport — Aegean, Sky Express. Three ports: Vathy (main, Piraeus), Karlovasi (alternate Piraeus arrival, closer to west Samos), Pythagoreio (south, Dodecanese & Turkey connections).
Tip: Pick the port that matches your base — Karlovasi if west, Vathy if east, Pythagoreio if south.
Best time to visit Samos
Samos is mountainous, green, wine-famous (the sweet Muscat) and lies a kilometre from the Turkish coast. Best May-October. The August panigiri at the Monastery of Vronta is a serious affair. Karlovasi and Vathy live year-round; the smaller villages close from November.
