20 June
The first big panigiri of the Sitia summer: on Pentecost Sunday evening the Palaikastro association sets tables in the schoolyard with a full menu (about 18 euros in 2025) and top Cretan musicians (Antonis and Nikos Xylouris in 2025). Palaikastro is the base for Vai and Kouremenos beaches, so it fits a June stay; book a table through the association.
Early July through mid-August
Eastern Crete's big summer festival, named after the 17th-century Sitia-born poet Vitsentzos Kornaros, author of 'Erotokritos'. Six weeks of concerts, dance, theatre and exhibitions in and around the Venetian Kazarma fortress, plus village panigiria with raki, Cretan bands and communal tables. One of the most honest cultural experiences on the island.
early July to mid-August
Ierapetra's municipal summer festival: concerts at the Kales fortress on the harbour and the 3rd Gymnasium yard, theatre, shadow puppetry and a 'White Night' on Eleftherias Square, plus village events in Myrtos, Pacheia Ammos, Gra Lygia and Ferma. Runs from the first days of July to mid-August (3 July – 6 August in 2025). The programme is published on the municipality site in June; most events are free.
20 July
The wine village on the old Sitia–Agios Nikolaos road holds its Profitis Ilias feast on the evening of 20 July with several local lyra players and a token entry (5 euros in 2025) covering food and Mouliana wine. Part of the Kornaria programme of the Municipality of Sitia; it starts at 9 pm and parking is along the main road.
26 July
The largest village of the Sitia hinterland celebrates Agia Paraskevi on the evening of 26 July in the Heroes' Park with a full dinner (15 euros in 2025) and a Cretan kompania (the Chariakis brothers in 2025); Ziros repeats the formula on 29 August for its second panigiri. Half an hour from Sitia through the plateau; tables go fast, so arrive by 9 pm.
a night in the first half of August
Kritsa's athletic club bakes the village's sweet myzithra pies for a summer glenti with live Cretan music in the schoolyard (8 August in 2026). The cultural association also runs a 'moonlit night' with boiled meat and raki up in the Kritsa forest at 1,000 m in late summer. Ten kilometres above Agios Nikolaos; the village is steep and parking is at the entrance by the Panagia Kera turn-off.
a weekend in the second half of August, 3 days
The plateau's biggest event, run by the Tzermiado association 'Anagennisi' for nearly thirty years in the old schoolyard: a Cretan night with a full potato-based dinner (15 euros in 2025, Stavrakakis and Alexakis), a laiko concert night with a national name (20 euros, Makropoulos in 2025, tables by phone) and a free Sunday of dance schools. 22–24 August in 2025, 21–22 August in 2026. The plateau is cool at night even in August.
6 August
Upper Zakros, the village at the top of the Gorge of the Dead, celebrates the Saviour on the evening of 6 August with several local musicians and a dinner ticket (15 euros, 10 for children in 2025). Combine a morning at the Minoan palace and Kato Zakros beach with the glenti in the village square; the road back to Sitia is an hour of bends.
9 August
The olive village south of Sitia celebrates its oil on the evening of 9 August with dishes cooked in the new-season Sitia PDO oil and a Cretan kompania (Petros Maroulis in 2025), part of the Kornaria programme. Twenty minutes from Sitia; the Minoan villa of Achladia is next to the village if you come early.
15 August
Armeni, a few kilometres inland from Sitia, holds the area's best-attended Dormition glenti on the night of 15 August in the schoolyard, with a full menu (15 euros in 2025) and a name kompania (Giorgos and Nikos Stratakis in 2025); Paraspori nearby does its Panagia the night before. Reserve through the village association and expect it to run until 3 am.
16 August
Sitia's raisin festival is held in Piskokefalo, the sultana village 4 km south of town, at the athletic centre on the evening of 16 August, with raisin-based sweets and dishes, local wine and a big Cretan stage (Grigoris Samolis in 2025). It closes the Kornaria panigiri weekend, so it is the one to pick if you can only do one Sitia glenti; Piskokefalo also holds a corn festival there on 19 July.
22 August
A young festival (4th edition in 2025) in the hill village of Sykia west of Sitia, on the evening of 22 August: fresh and dried figs, fig sweets and raki, with local lyra players (Fasoulas and Kallergis in 2025) and a 5-euro entry. Small and friendly; go for the food rather than a big stage.
5–6 December
The town named after the saint keeps 6 December as its patronal feast: vespers on the 5th, hierarchical liturgy and a procession of the icon through the centre and along the lake on the 6th, with the municipal band and school parades, and the town's Christmas lights switched on around the same days. The tiny 8th-century chapel of Agios Nikolaos at the Minos Beach headland, which gave the town its name, also holds a liturgy.
Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar.
