Our verdict

Skiathos and Skopelos sit forty minutes apart by ferry and split the Sporades experience between them. Skiathos is the extrovert: an airport, sixty-plus sandy beaches on a tiny island, and a party town. Skopelos is the introvert: greener, quieter, no airport, and prettier in the ways that don't photograph from a beach bar.

Skiathos earns its 4.7 nightlife score honestly — the old port fills up every July night — and Koukounaries and Lalaria are genuinely top-tier beaches (4.6). The price is crowds and a package-holiday feel in August. Skopelos trades all that for pine forests that reach the water, a beautiful chora of slate roofs, the Mamma Mia chapel at Kastani, and evenings that end with dinner rather than a DJ. Its beaches (4.2) are very good; its access (2.5) means a ferry from Skiathos or a long ride from Volos.

Choose Skiathos for beach variety, nightlife, and the convenience of flying straight in. Choose Skopelos for atmosphere, walking, and a week that moves at half speed. The classic play is both: fly to Skiathos, spend three nights, then cross to Skopelos for four.
