Our verdict
The quiet end of the Sporades, one short ferry hop apart, and a choice between two shades of calm. Skopelos (3.6) is the postcard; Alonnisos (3.8) is the retreat.
Skopelos has the architecture — its chora is among the loveliest towns in the Aegean — plus the Mamma Mia chapel, pine forests, and a fuller taverna scene. Alonnisos has the water: it sits inside Europe's largest marine park, home of the monk seal, and its bays (Leftos Gialos, Agios Dimitrios's white spit) have a clarity even the Cyclades struggle to match (4.4 beaches). Its old village, rebuilt after the 1965 earthquake by northern Europeans who fell in love with it, hangs above the sea with sunset views. Both are ferry-only (2.5 access) via Skiathos or Volos.
Choose Skopelos for the prettier town, more variety, and easier logistics. Choose Alonnisos for snorkelling, marine-park boat trips, hiking mule paths, and the deepest quiet in the Sporades. Combining them is trivially easy — they're 30 minutes apart.
