The short answer: Skiathos scores 3.9 to Alonnisos's 3.8, which is as close as this site gets, and the beach scores are nearly level too — 4.6 against 4.4. So this is not a quality comparison. It is a crowds-and-cost comparison. Skiathos has an international airport, Koukounaries, and a nightlife score of 4.7. Alonnisos has 2,750 people, the National Marine Park, and costs less (4.0 against 3.0). Same archipelago, opposite holidays. If you want to be entertained, Skiathos. If you want to be left alone, Alonnisos.
Choose Alonnisos if…
- You want the marine park. The National Marine Park of Alonnisos and the Northern Sporades was Greece's first, and it is one of the last strongholds of the Mediterranean monk seal.
- You dive or snorkel. The Peristera wreck, a 5th-century BC cargo ship off the neighbouring islet, is Greece's first shipwreck opened to recreational divers as an underwater museum.
- You want the cheaper island — 4.0 for affordability against Skiathos's 3.0, the largest single gap between them.
- You want to walk. Alonnisos has a proper marked trail network and the Old Village, abandoned after the 1965 earthquake and slowly restored, is one of the loveliest places in the Sporades.
- You want quiet. 2,750 residents against 6,088, and far fewer visitors on top of that.
Choose Skiathos if…
- You want to fly direct. Skiathos has the only international airport in the Sporades and access scores 4.5 against Alonnisos's 2.5 — the decisive practical difference.
- You want the famous beaches. Koukounaries is a genuine contender for the best sandy beach in the Aegean, and Lalaria, reachable only by boat, is the one on the postcards.
- You want nights out. Nightlife 4.7 against 2.5. Skiathos Town has bars, music and a season that runs properly late.
- You are travelling with people who want organised beaches, watersports and a choice of restaurants.
- You have three days and do not want to spend one of them getting there.
The beaches are close; the experience is not
4.6 against 4.4 is nearly a tie, and it should be — both islands have pine growing to pale sand over clear water. What differs is who else is there. Skiathos's south coast is a chain of organised bays: Koukounaries with its pine lagoon behind it, Banana, Vromolimnos, Achladies, all with sunbeds, boats and a bus that runs along the single main road every fifteen minutes. It works extremely well and it is busy.
Alonnisos has Chrisi Milia, Kokkinokastro under red cliffs with a sunken ancient town offshore, Leftos Gialos and Milia. Some have a taverna; several have nothing. In August you will still find space.
Access is what you are really choosing
Skiathos scores 4.5 because the airport takes direct European flights all summer, and the approach over the runway threshold at Xanemos is famous enough that people gather to watch it. Alonnisos scores 2.5: you fly to Skiathos or Volos, or take the ferry from Volos, Agios Konstantinos or Mantoudi, and then continue by hydrofoil past Skopelos. It is two legs, not one.
The upside of that friction is the entire reason Alonnisos feels the way it does. The islands are 40 km apart and the boat is straightforward in season, so combining them is easy and arguably the best use of a week here.
The marine park is not a formality
Alonnisos's cultural and natural case rests on it. The park covers the sea around Alonnisos and the uninhabited islets to the northeast — Peristera, Kyra Panagia, Gioura, Piperi — and it exists to protect the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world. Day boats run out to the permitted zones from Patitiri; Piperi itself is closed to visitors, which tells you the protection is real rather than decorative.
The Peristera wreck deserves its own mention. An ancient cargo ship carrying thousands of amphorae went down off the islet in the late 5th century BC, and it is now accessible to certified divers as Greece's first underwater museum. If you dive at all, this is the single best reason to choose Alonnisos over anywhere else in the Sporades.
Skiathos earns its score honestly
It is fashionable to be sniffy about developed islands, and it would be dishonest here. Skiathos is 49 km² with a beach score of 4.6, more good sand per square kilometre than almost anywhere in Greece, and a town that is genuinely attractive once you are off the main strip. Culture is its weak point — 2.0, the lowest of the four Sporades — because beyond the ruined Kastro on the north cliffs and the Bourtzi, there is not much to see. Nobody comes for the museums.
The honest verdict
Alonnisos is the better island for a certain traveller and Skiathos is the better holiday for most. If you would rather hike a headland than queue for a sunbed, and the phrase "first marine park in Greece" made you sit up, go to Alonnisos and save money doing it. If you are booking for a family or a group, want a direct flight, and expect a choice of beach clubs, Skiathos will not disappoint you. With six or seven days, do both — Skiathos first because you land there anyway, then two hours on the boat to somewhere quieter.
