Thasos
3.7/5Northern forests, marble beaches, and ancient Agora
Northern forests, marble beaches, and ancient Agora
Why 3.7: very good beaches and good value, and nothing that actively lets it down.
Thasos is reached from northern Greece, not Athens — a short ferry from Kavala or Keramoti. It is the northernmost Greek island, closer to Bulgaria than to Athens, and it looks nothing like the Cyclades: dense pine and plane forests cover the mountains, rivers feed the marble quarries, and the east coast has long white-sand beaches. In antiquity Thasos was famously wealthy from its gold and marble; the marble is still exported today, and the ancient Agora at Limenas is one of the most complete in Greece, with a 4th-century BC theatre a fifteen-minute climb through the pines above it. The rest of the island is mountain villages — slate-roofed Panagia, Theologos in the hills — the twin harbours and quarry cuts at Aliki, and the cliff pool of the Giola Lagoon. Skip it if you are starting from Athens: there is no airport and no Piraeus ferry, only a seven-hour drive north. Come in June or September rather than August, when Marble Beach and Golden Beach are overrun by mid-morning. Three days and a hire car cover it.
Good for
- Travellers who want forest as well as sea — pine and plane cover the mountains above long east-coast sand
- Anyone arriving overland from Thessaloniki — the crossing from Keramoti takes 30–75 minutes and costs €5–9
- Ruin hunters — the ancient Agora at Limenas is one of the most complete in Greece, with the theatre above it
Maybe skip if
- If you're starting from Athens — there is no airport and no Piraeus ferry, only a seven-hour drive north
- If you want Marble Beach or Golden Beach to yourself in summer; both are overrun by mid-morning
Getting there
No airport. No Piraeus ferry. Reach Thasos from Kavala or Keramoti (mainland N, ~7h drive from Athens or fly to Kavala) — frequent crossings, 30–75 minutes.
Tip: Keramoti is closer to Thasos but Kavala has more ferry options — pick by where you fly in.
Best time to visit Thasos
Thasos is the northernmost Greek island — pine-forested, mountainous, drivable from Thessaloniki via Keramoti. Eastern European tourism (Bulgarians, Serbs, Romanians) is heavy in summer because the drive is so easy. Best May-October; June and September. Olive oil, marble, honey, the Ancient Theatre and the Aliki double-bay are the highlights.

- 10:00 · Thasos Town (Limenas)
Main port and capital. The old town sits on top of the ancient city — you'll see ancient ruins in people's gardens. - 11:00 · Ancient Agora
One of the best-preserved Agoras in Greece — paved Roman plazas, stoas, Hellenistic temples. Right next to the archaeological museum. - 12:30 · Ancient Theatre of Thasos
15-min climb through pine forest to the 4th-century BC theatre carved into the hillside. Still used for summer performances.
- 🍴 Stop for lunch · Thasos Town (Limenas) — see Eat & Drink below

- 10:00 · Panagia Village
Traditional stone-built village with slate roofs and a spring running through the main square. Old-world Thasos.
- 11:00 · Potamia
Home of sculptor Polygnotos Vagis — small museum in the village celebrating his work.

Day 3: West Coast Beaches
- 10:00 · Limenaria
Second-largest town on Thasos. Working fishing port on the southwest coast.

Lively resort village with a long sandy beach and dozens of tavernas on the promenade.
- 17:00 · Marble Beach (Saliara)
Reached by 4x4 or boat. White marble pebbles and turquoise water — the most photogenic beach on Thasos.
