Base4.2Corfu4 daysOthonoi is the largest and most westerly of the Diapontia islands, northwest of Corfu — in fact the westernmost point of Greece. Legend ties it to Calypso and the cave where she is said to have kept Odysseus. It has a working harbour village (Ammos), a scatter of hamlets in the green interior, and a strong emigrant history to New York and Italy that you still hear in the accents and see in the shuttered mansions. Beaches are white-pebble and often deserted; the ferry from Corfu is long, so most who come stay a night or two.
Getting there
No airport. Small passenger ferries run from Agios Stefanos in northwest Corfu several times a week in summer, calling at Erikousa and Mathraki en route — the full trip can take up to 4 hours. Book ahead in August.

Best time to visit Othonoi
A summer island: rooms and tavernas run roughly late May to September. June and September give warm water and empty bays; July–August bring Greek-Italian families and the handful of rooms fill. Winter service is minimal.

A bright white-pebble bay on the exposed southwest coast, backed by pale cliffs — the island's showpiece beach. Reached by footpath or a short boat trip; bring shade.

A sea cave on the wild southwest shore tied by legend to the nymph Calypso and Odysseus. Best seen from a small boat; the surrounding water is a deep, clear blue.
