Meganisi is a 25-minute ferry from Nydri and a different decade from Lefkada. About a thousand people live here across three villages — Spartochori on its clifftop above the little port of Porto Spilia, Katomeri around a plane-shaded square, and Vathy at the head of a taverna-lined cove — with no airport, no resorts and no chains. The set pieces are on the water: Papanikolis, one of the largest sea caves in Greece, named after the submarine that sheltered in it during the war, and Ammoglossa, a blond tongue of sand at the north-west tip with warm shallow water on both sides and Lefkada straight across. Dinner is grilled fish at Errikos in Vathy. Skip it if you want museums, ruins or anything resembling nightlife: this guide covers three beaches, the most remote of them, Limonari, is reachable only by boat or a long walk, and the evening entertainment is the harbour. Go in September, when the sea is still warm, the day-trippers have thinned and the evenings are the calmest of the year. Two days is the right length, and the ferry takes cars — book it in August.

Getting there
How to get to Meganisi from Athens: drive (or take an intercity bus) to Lefkada — about 3h 45m via the Rio–Antirrio bridge and the causeway to Lefkada Town.

From Lefkada, continue 17 km south to Nydri (Nidri) port. From Nydri, a small car-ferry runs to Meganisi (Porto Spilia or Vathy) every 1–2 hours in summer; the crossing takes 25 minutes and costs €2–4 per passenger plus €8–14 for a car. There's no airport on Meganisi itself — the nearest one is Aktion (Preveza), about 50 minutes from Nydri by car.
Tip: The ferry carries cars, so driving your own vehicle works well — book ahead in August. A half-day trip from Lefkada gives you a glimpse; spend at least one night to actually feel the island.
Best time to visit Meganisi
Meganisi sits off Lefkada — a quiet sailing-friendly island with three villages and protected coves. Best June-September. Day-trippers from Lefkada come during summer; staying overnight you'll find the evenings almost empty. Mostly accessed via the Nidri ferry.

Ammoglossa
The best beach on Meganisi: a blond tongue of fine sand reaching into the channel at the island's north-west tip, with shallow warm water on both sides and Lefkada straight across. Because it's double-sided, there's always a calm shore — and in the soft late-afternoon light it's the island's signature photograph.

Day 1: Spartochori & the Sea Caves

The most beautiful village on Meganisi — a hillside settlement of white houses above the main harbour. Extraordinary views over the straits to Lefkada and the surrounding islands. The village feels genuinely untouched.

The little beach directly below Spartochori — a strip of pale pebbles and clear green-blue water at the foot of the village cliff, with yachts swinging at anchor just offshore. An easy walk down for a first swim before the day's boat trip. - 12:00 · Papanikolis Cave
One of the largest sea caves in Greece — named after the submarine that sheltered here in WWII. Accessible by boat. The cave opens into a cathedral-like chamber with extraordinary blue light.

Day 2: Katomeri & Departure

The second village of Meganisi — quieter than Spartochori, with a beautiful square shaded by plane trees and a small church. Morning coffee here before exploring the south of the island.

Remote pebble beach on the south coast, accessible only by boat or a long walk. Crystal clear water and complete solitude. - 16:00 · Spartochori (Porto Spilia) — Ferry back to Nydri
End the loop back at Spartochori's little port, Porto Spilia, for a last coffee on the waterfront before the ferry across to Nydri on Lefkada. Arrive twenty minutes early in August — the boat fills with day-trippers and their scooters.
