Lesvos
4.0/5The island of ouzo, Sappho, and petrified forests
A complete circuit of the island — from the Aegean's ouzo capital to the birthplace of Sappho, medieval castles to petrified forests.
Why 4.0: genuinely low prices and exceptional history and architecture — but you cannot do it without a car.
Lesvos takes six days and a car, and it repays both. Greece's third-largest island is a land of olive groves — they cover 30% of it, some trees over 1,500 years old — with hot springs, small mountain villages that refuse to change, and a rhythm of its own. It combines exceptional natural diversity, from the volcanic west and the pine ridge of Lepetymnos to the flamingo-thick salt pans at Skala Polichnitou, with a cultural line running from Sappho, born at Eressos, to the Nobel Prize-winning poet Elytis. What it is good at is concrete: the ouzeries of Plomari and the Barbayiannis distillery, the UNESCO-listed Petrified Forest above Sigri, the Byzantine castle over Molyvos, grilled sardines at Skala Kalloni, and long beaches — Vatera runs 8 uninterrupted kilometres — that are almost always yours. Skip it if you cannot drive, or want something compact and close: the Piraeus ferry is an 8–13 hour overnight via Chios, and in August the popular beaches are packed by 10am. Come in June or September, the two months the island is at its best. It is not Santorini and does not want to be.
Good for
- Drivers with a full week — Greece's third-largest island takes six days and repays them
- Anyone who travels for food and drink — the ouzeries of Plomari, the Barbayiannis distillery, grilled sardines at Skala Kalloni
- Travellers who want culture and landscape together — the UNESCO Petrified Forest above Sigri and the Byzantine castle over Molyvos
Maybe skip if
- If you cannot drive — Lesvos is 1,633 km² and you simply cannot do it without a car
- If you want something compact and close to Athens — the Piraeus ferry is an 8–13 hour overnight via Chios
Getting there
Domestic + summer charter airport at Mytilini — Aegean, Sky Express, charters. Ferries from Piraeus dock at Mytilini Port, overnight via Chios. Daily year-round.
Tip: Daily summer ferry to Ayvalik (Turkey) takes ~1.5h — easy add-on.
Best time to visit Lesvos
Lesvos is the third-largest Greek island — far too big to feel touristy. Olive groves cover 30% of the island, and the food (sardines from Kalloni, ouzo from Plomari) defines the experience. Best May-October. The Petrified Forest is open year-round. Cruise tourism is minimal — this is an island for people who travel.
