DAY 1

Chania Old Town

15 km Β· 25 min πŸŒ™ Sleep: Chania Town
09:00

Venetian Harbour

The most beautiful harbour in Crete β€” a sweeping arc of Venetian architecture, the 16th-century lighthouse, and crystal water. Walk the waterfront at your own pace.

Venetian Harbour
10:00

Chania Old Town

Labyrinthine lanes of the old Venetian and Ottoman quarter. Browse the leather market on Skridlof Street, the covered market, and the Byzantine museum.

Chania Old Town
11:30

Kastelli Hill

The oldest part of Chania, with Minoan ruins beneath Venetian walls. Superb views over the harbour and the White Mountains.

Kastelli Hill
16:30

Nea Chora Beach

Town beach 15 minutes walk from the old town. Sandy, shallow, family-friendly. Good for an evening swim before dinner.

Nea Chora Beach
🍽 Lunch Β· Venetian Harbour By the Venetian harbour. To Maridaki is the town's go-to fish taverna, right on the water. For the finest seafood, Thalassino Ageri sits on a rock platform by the sea in Halepa, just east of the Old Town β€” book ahead. Inland, Ntounias at Drakona has cooked farm-to-table for twenty years β€” everything from their own farm, on wood stoves, slowly (do not go in a hurry). €25–50. In Sfakia, Panorama at Askyfou serves Eleni Lentari's cooking over the whole plateau for under €25.
🍽 Dinner Β· Old Town Tamam occupies a restored Ottoman bathhouse β€” the most atmospheric room in Chania, with Cretan-Ottoman cooking (a Lonely Planet and New York Times regular). Nearby Well of the Turk does refined Eastern-Mediterranean plates in the quiet Splantzia quarter.
πŸŒ™ Evening Chania's Old Venetian Harbour is the stage β€” a 700m waterfront curve of bars under floodlit Venetian faΓ§ades and the Egyptian lighthouse. Pallas for rooftop harbour views, Sinagogi for cocktails in a former synagogue's courtyard, Fagotto for late jazz. Wander the promenade and pick your mood.
DAY 2

Balos Lagoon & Gramvousa

110 km Β· 130 min πŸŒ™ Sleep: Chania Town
09:00

Kissamos Port

Take the morning ferry from Kissamos port to Balos β€” the easiest way to reach the lagoon without the dirt road. Tickets from the port office.

20:30

Dinner in Chania Town

Bus from Chora Sfakion over the White Mountains back to Chania Town β€” about 90 minutes through some of the most spectacular terrain on Crete. Light dinner; you will have walked 16 km in the heat and need an early night.

Planning questions

Is 5 days enough for Crete (Chania)?

Yes, for a first visit. The plan covers the essentials at a pace that leaves time in the water. With one more day, add a slow beach day with no driving.

Do I need a car on Crete (Chania)?

Yes. The beaches and villages are spread out and the bus does not reach the ones that matter; book ahead for July and August.

Where should I stay on Crete (Chania)?

The plan sleeps in Chania Town and Paleochora, so you are not crossing the island every morning.
