Our verdict
The Athenian weekend dilemma: both under three hours from Piraeus, both cheap by Cycladic standards (3.8 affordability), both blissfully undeveloped. Serifos edges it overall (3.9 vs 3.5) — but Kythnos has its own case.
Kythnos's signature is Kolona, the double-sided sandbar you've seen in every drone reel, plus thermal springs at Loutra (the only ones in the Cyclades), the cave of Katafyki, and Dryopida's tiled roofs. It's the closest real Cycladic island to Athens, which makes it busy with Greek boats in August and pleasantly local otherwise. Serifos brings the more dramatic chora — one of the great Cycladic sights — better and more numerous beaches (4.5 vs 4.2), and a slightly more 'discovered' but still unspoiled feel.
Choose Kythnos for the shortest escape, hot springs, and Kolona at sunrise before the day boats. Choose Serifos if you can spare the extra hour — the chora and the west-coast beaches justify it. Either way, go June or September; both islands are at their best without the August Athens exodus.
