An hour apart in the Saronic, and a clean trade: Hydra (4.0) is the icon with the price tag; Poros (3.5) is the easy weekend nobody brags about.
Hydra is unique in Greece — no cars at all, a preserved stone amphitheatre of a harbour town, donkeys doing the freight, art history from Leonard Cohen to the Deste Foundation. It's also expensive (1.8 affordability), beach-poor (2.2; rock platforms mostly), and heaving with day-trippers at noon. Poros is softer: a green pine channel opposite the Peloponnese, a clock-tower town, Love Bay and Russian Bay for decent swims (3.0), family tavernas at Askeli — and prices a working Athenian actually pays (3.2). Both are quick hydrofoil runs from Piraeus (Poros barely an hour, 4.8 access).
Choose Hydra for romance, art, and the single most beautiful harbour arrival in Greece — stay overnight to have it after the boats leave. Choose Poros for an unpretentious family weekend with swimming and zero logistics. Cohen pilgrims: there's only one answer.
