Santorini in 3 Days

The caldera villages, the volcano, the black sand beaches and the best sunset in the Aegean.

Santorini in 3 days, day by day: what to see, in what order, how far you drive and where you sleep. Base: Aenaon Villas, Imerovigli.

πŸ– Beaches on this plan: Vlychada Beach Β· Red Beach β€” each links to its card with the wind rule and today’s conditions. All 3, ranked β†’

DAY 1

Fira, Imerovigli & the Caldera Walk

10 km Β· 15 min πŸŒ™ Sleep: Aenaon Villas, Imerovigli
09:00

Fira

The capital β€” perched on the caldera rim 300 m above the sea. Start early with a coffee on the main square before the cruise crowds arrive (around 10:30).

Fira
10:00

Museum of Prehistoric Thera

Small but extraordinary. Holds the Minoan frescoes from Akrotiri β€” among the most important Bronze Age artworks ever found. €6 entry. Spend 90 minutes.

Museum of Prehistoric Thera
12:00

Vlychada Beach (swim) πŸ– beach card Β· wind & conditions β†’

Drive south from Fira (~25 min) to Vlychada β€” Santorini's lunar landscape beach with sculpted ash-grey cliffs from centuries of wind erosion. Far quieter than Red Beach, dark sand, deeper water. Best beach on the island for actually swimming.

Vlychada Beach (swim)
15:30

Caldera Path β€” Fira to Imerovigli

The finest walk in Santorini β€” a flat, well-paved cliff path (1.5 km, 30 min) along the caldera edge. Unbeatable views of the volcano and Thirassia the whole way. End at your hotel to drop bags.

Caldera Path β€” Fira to Imerovigli
17:30

Skaros Rock

The medieval rock fortress promontory below Imerovigli. Descend the stone steps (15 min down, 20 min up), scramble to the chapel at the tip. 360Β° caldera views that beat anything else on the island. Wear trainers.

Skaros Rock
🍽 Lunch Β· Vlychada Down at the marina in Vlychada. ΀ο Ψαράκι is the local favourite β€” fish landed just offshore, simply done, fair prices (booking essential). Seaside sits right on the black sand for a more polished lunch.
🍽 Dinner Β· Imerovigli Blu does refined Greek plates on an Imerovigli caldera terrace, a short walk from your hotel. For the island's most celebrated table, book Metaxi Mas (Exo Gonia, ~15 min inland) β€” no caldera view, just the best food on Santorini; reserve days ahead. For a night off the caldera, Roza's in Vourvoulos is one of the few places on the island where the local tradition is the point rather than the view β€” around €50–75 a head, April to October.
πŸŒ™ Evening Fira has the island's only real clubs, strung along the caldera edge. Start with cocktails and a house-music crowd at Tango (caldera views, open till 4am), dance at Koo Club or Enigma, or keep it cheap and loud at Two Brothers Bar. Imerovigli, where you sleep, is a 10-min taxi back and blissfully quiet.
DAY 2

Volcano, Hot Springs & Ammoudi Bay

12 km Β· 25 min πŸŒ™ Sleep: Aenaon Villas, Imerovigli
09:00

Volcano boat tour β€” from Fira Old Port

Walk or cable-car down to Fira Old Port (taxi from Imerovigli: 10 min, €15). Boats leave around 09:30 β€” half-day tours cover Nea Kameni volcano, the Palea Kameni hot springs and Thirassia. Book the combined tour (~€30-45/person, 5 hours).

10:00

Nea Kameni Volcano walk

Walk up to the crater of the still-active volcano (last eruption 1950). Bring sturdy shoes β€” the path is loose volcanic scree. €5 cash entry to the volcanic park. 45 min round-trip.

Nea Kameni Volcano walk
11:30

Palea Kameni Hot Springs

The boat anchors offshore β€” you swim to the sulphur hot springs, where hot water bubbles from underwater vents. Water is tepid (yellow-orange from the iron) and stains swimsuits. Bring an old one.

Palea Kameni Hot Springs
16:00

Oia village

Taxi or bus from Fira (15 min). Walk the pedestrian main street β€” whitewashed alleys, the Maritime Museum, the blue-domed churches. Crowded after 17:00 as sunset tourists arrive.

Oia village
23:00

Evening in Imerovigli

Drive back along the caldera road from Oia to Imerovigli (about 15 minutes). The cliff lights of Fira and Imerovigli are spectacular at night β€” your villa's terrace is the perfect way to end the day.

🍽 Dinner · Oia Dinner in Oia, away from the sunset scrum. Roka does honest, creative Greek in a cosy back-lane courtyard. Or head down the steps to Dimitris at Ammoudi Bay for fresh fish right on the water.
πŸŒ™ Evening Tonight belongs to Oia. The sunset from the caldera rim is the headline act β€” claim a cocktail-bar spot an hour early β€” then a long seafood dinner down at Ammoudi Bay by the water. This is Santorini's romantic, slow night, not a late one.
DAY 3

Wine, Pyrgos & the Red Beach

35 km Β· 70 min
10:00

Santo Wines Winery

The cooperative winery outside Pyrgos with the best caldera views of any winery on the island. Tasting flights from €25 (12 wines + small plates). Book online β€” request the 10:00 slot, much quieter.

Santo Wines Winery
11:30

Pyrgos village

The highest village on Santorini and the oldest β€” a Venetian hill town of whitewashed alleys climbing to a ruined castle. Five minutes' walk from end to end but worth an hour. Far less crowded than Fira or Oia.

Pyrgos village
14:00

Akrotiri Archaeological Site

The 'Pompeii of the Aegean' β€” a Bronze Age town buried by the Minoan eruption around 1600 BCE and preserved under ash. Covered walkway over multi-story buildings. €12 entry, allow 1 hour.

Akrotiri Archaeological Site
15:30

Red Beach πŸ– beach card Β· wind & conditions β†’

A 5-min walk from Akrotiri. Spectacular red volcanic cliffs and dark red pebble sand. Swimming requires caution (rockfalls possible) and the path is now partly restricted β€” the view from above is the real reward.

Red Beach
19:30

Santorini Airport (departure)

Santorini Airport (JTR) is just 10 minutes east of Akrotiri/Red Beach. Most island flights run mid-afternoon to evening. If your flight is late, the Pyrgos hilltop chapels are a great sunset spot before heading to the airport.

🍽 Lunch Β· Exo Gonia Inland lunch in the vineyards. Metaxi Mas is the island's benchmark β€” Cretan-leaning cooking on a terrace over the vines (book ahead, cash). Nearby Aroma Avlis pairs Santorinian plates with the Art Space winery. In Fira itself, Santorinia is the rare taverna in the busy lanes cooking recovered Santorinian recipes β€” €30–50 a head and open all year, which almost nothing else here is.

Planning questions

Is 3 days enough for Santorini?

Yes, for a first visit. The plan covers the essentials at a pace that leaves time in the water. With one more day, add a slow beach day with no driving.

Do I need a car on Santorini?

It helps for a day or two, but the core of this plan works with the bus, taxis and boats.

Where should I stay on Santorini?

The plan sleeps in Aenaon Villas, Imerovigli.
