Carnival 'boules' and the 'alani', Psara

14 March

Through the weekends of the Triodion and on Tsiknopempti, masked 'boules' in improvised costumes go from house to house; on the final carnival Sunday the village sets tables in a circle in the big square (the 'alani'), men and women at separate tables, with ouzo, mezedes, spinach pies and hours of carnival and folk songs. Winter ferries permitting, it is the most intimate carnival in the Aegean.

Commemoration of the Psara Holocaust

Last Sunday of June

Tiny Psara remembers the 1824 Ottoman destruction that wiped out one of the revolution's great naval islands — the last defenders blew up their own powder magazine at Mavri Rachi rather than surrender. The last Sunday of June brings a memorial service, wreaths and cultural events. Solomos's poem about the 'black ridge of Psara' is part of every Greek's schooling.

Night procession of the Panagia icon from the monastery

31 July · Psara

At midnight on 31 July the young people of Psara walk three hours up to the monastery of the Dormition in the north of the island and carry the icon back down to the village at dawn, where it stays until the feast. A moving, entirely local custom; join the walk with a torch and good shoes, or wait at the harbour for the arrival.

Feast of the Dormition at the monastery, Psara

14–15 August

On the eve, 14 August, islanders and returning Psarians go up to the monastery of the Dormition for vespers, after which the church serves chickpeas to the fasting pilgrims; the party then moves to the old threshing floor, where a small panigiri has been revived in recent years. A rare chance to see the island full; boats from Chios are booked out that week.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar. If you know better, the feedback button exists for exactly this.
