Feast of Agios Charalambos, patron of Paxos, Gaios

10 February

Agios Charalambos is the protector of Paxos and his 10 February feast is the island's winter high point: hierarchical liturgy at his church in Gaios with the Metropolitan of Corfu, the mayor and the schools, then a procession of the icon along the waterfront and a reception. Boats from Corfu run all winter; almost nothing else is open, which is the point.

Litany of Panagia Vellianiton, Sunday of the Paralytic, Gaios

23 May · Gaios (Velianitatika)

On the fourth Sunday after Easter the ancient icon of the Dormition is carried from Agios Georgios in Velianitatika through the olive groves, chapels and lanes of Gaios to the islet monastery, with the Metropolitan of Corfu, the schools and the philharmonic, and blessings at decorated stops along the way; broth and meat are again served under the pergolas at the monastery gate. Falls in May, a lovely time on Paxos; the whole thing starts after the 9:30am liturgy.

Panigiri of Agioi Apostoloi, Gaios

28–29 June

The Corfu-region festival calendars list Gaios among the places keeping Peter and Paul on 29 June, with vespers on the 28th and a village evening with music and food on the square; Paxos also joins Corfu in the Panagia Vlachernon celebrations on 2 July. Small and local; ask at the port kiosk which square the music is in.

Feast of the Dormition on Panagia islet, Gaios

14–15 August · Gaios (Panagia islet)

On 14–15 August the whole of Paxos crosses to the monastery of Panagia Vellianiton on the islet that closes Gaios harbour: vespers and vigil on the eve, liturgy in the morning, and then the centuries-old custom of the islanders serving beef broth (zomos) and meat cooked in copper cauldrons to every pilgrim, local or visitor. Five or six local boatmen shuttle from the Gaios quay from early morning for a small fare; the wait was minimal in 2026.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar. If you know better, the feedback button exists for exactly this.
