Feast of Agios Georgios, patron of Koufonisi

St George is the island's protector: after the liturgy on 23 April (or Easter Monday if the date falls in Lent) the icon is taken round the island by caique with the fishing boats escorting it along the coast, the lanes are strewn with flowers, and the community serves boiled beef and patsas with drinks before the party moves to the tavernas. A rare chance to see Koufonisi as a working fishing island before the season.

Fishermen's Festival (Giorti tou Psara)

last Saturday of June · Pano Koufonisi (Chora)

On the last Saturday of June the fishermen of Koufonisi, one of the biggest fishing fleets per head in Greece, cook their catch on the harbour square and hand out fresh fish, fish soup, meze and drinks free, with traditional music and dancing; the shops close for the night. Get there by 21:00 and bring cash for the tavernas afterwards.

Panigiri of Profitis Ilias

19–20 July · Pano Koufonisi

The chapel of Profitis Ilias on the island's low summit celebrates on 19-20 July with vespers and an island glenti afterwards: food, wine and violins. Small and easy to reach on foot from the village.

Dormition panigiri on Kato Koufonisi

15 August

On 15 August the whole island crosses by caique to the uninhabited Kato Koufonisi for the liturgy at the church of the Virgin, followed by a free meal of fish and meat in the courtyard and a panigiri with kerasmata and violins; the return crossing is an informal race between the boats, and the winner's crew is feasted again. Boats fill up, so be at the harbour early in the morning.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar.
