Religious

Feast of Agios Ioannis o Rosos, Prokopi

26–27 May

The biggest pilgrimage in Evia: the incorrupt relic of St John the Russian lies in the 1951 church at Prokopi, and on 26-27 May tens of thousands come, many walking overnight from Chalkida or Mantoudi, for the vigil and the grand procession of the silver reliquary on the morning of the 27th. The shrine has a 160-bed hostel and a canteen, and the village fills with stalls. Roads into Prokopi are closed to traffic on the day, so park on the Mantoudi side and walk.

Carnival

Klidonas of Ai-Giannis, Limni harbour

23–24 June

On 23 June the Elymnians light the St John's bonfire on the harbour of Limni and revive the klidonas: girls' tokens drawn from a jug of 'silent water', couplets, jumping the flames, then music on the quay. It is in the municipal summer programme every year and free; the seafront tavernas are the place to sit and watch.

Fish Festival (Giorti Psariou), Limni harbour

mid-July, 1 evening

The Cultural Society of Limni fries and grills the local catch on the harbour one evening in mid-July (18 July in 2026) with wine and a live orchestra; a week later, on 23-24 July, the same quay hosts the 'Solid Greece Taste' gastronomy festival of Central Greece products. Both free; fish runs out early so do not dawdle over the ouzo.

Panigiri of Profitis Ilias, Drymona

20 July

The mountain village of Drymona, above the waterfall of the same name, holds its Profitis Ilias panigiri in the schoolyard on 20 July with a live orchestra, grilled meat and dancing; it is in the municipal programme. Combine with a swim at the Drymona falls in the afternoon and drive carefully down the bends afterwards.

Olive Festival, Rovies

late August, 1-2 evenings

Rovies sits in the biggest olive grove in northern Evia and celebrates it in the last third of August: an evening of olive-and-oil dishes and dances in the school (19 August 2026), a local products fair on the beach (21 Aug) and the olive festival proper in the square with singers on 22 August, plus an 'experiential' olive-grove day in early September. Village-scale, free, and the olives and oil are sold at producer prices.

Panigiri of Sotiros (Transfiguration), Mantoudi

6 August

Mantoudi's parish church is the Metamorfosi, and on 6 August the food for the feast is cooked in cauldrons in the churchyard and shared after the liturgy, with music in the square; the municipality lists it each summer. A weekday-style village panigiri rather than a concert, which is the point.

Panigiri of Panagia (eve of 15 August), Papades

14–15 August

The village of Papades, in the hills between Agia Anna and Vasilika, throws its Panagia panigiri in the square on the night of 14 August with a live orchestra, organised by the local cultural society and listed by the municipality. Small, cheap and genuinely local; the coast villages are 15 minutes away for a bed.

Naftiki Vradia (Naval Night) of Dekapentavgoustos, Limni

15 August

Limni, an old shipowners' town, marks the evening of 15 August with a naval night on the harbour: decorated boats, Bengal lights and flares over the bay, and music on the quay. Part of the municipal summer programme; the waterfront is packed, so come by 8 pm for a table.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar.
