Other

Liberation anniversary and Agios Spyridon procession, Elafonisos

9–12 July

Elafonisos celebrates its union with Greece (6 July 1850) and the consecration of its harbour church together: bells and flags on the 6th, and on the 9th a hierarchical liturgy with the Metropolitan of Monemvasia and Sparta followed by a procession of the icon of Agios Spyridon around the harbour with children in costume, then cultural performances on the harbour square in the evening. Early July is quieter and cheaper than August on the island.

Fishermen's Festival, Elafonisos harbour

an evening in the last ten days of August · Elafonisos (harbour square)

Elafonisos has the biggest fishing fleet in Laconia and its fishermen's society hosts a night on the harbour square in the last ten days of August: fresh fish grilled by the fishermen, free wine, island dances with a live band until the small hours, sometimes an exhibition of old photos from the society's archive. The municipality calls it the most authentic event in the Peloponnese, which for once is not far off; the exact date is announced in early August.

Panigiri

Panigiri of Panagia Katonisiotissa, Kato Nisi

14–15 August

The island's big day: an all-night vigil at the church of Panagia Katonisiotissa in Kato Nisi on the 14th, while the young people light fires on the Panagia beach below and sing and dance until dawn; liturgy on the morning of the 15th, then a popular panigiri with the island's women's and children's dance groups in the afternoon. Boats used to bring crowds from Mani and Kythira; today it is islanders and summer visitors, and the beach bonfire is the thing to see.

Religious

Feast of Agios Spyridon, patron of Elafonisos

11–12 December · Elafonisos (harbour church)

The patron's winter feast at the church of Agios Spyridon on the harbour on 12 December: vespers on the 11th, liturgy and a procession of the icon along the quay on the 12th, and a reception offered by the parish. The island has a few hundred winter residents and one or two kafeneia open; the ferry from Pounta runs all year.

Dates are resolved for 2027: fixed saint's days as they fall, movable feasts computed from Orthodox Easter (2027: 2 May). Panigiria are usually held on the eve of the saint's day, and a village occasionally shifts one to the nearest weekend — where an entry says "confirm locally", the date comes from recent years' announcements rather than an official calendar. If you know better, the feedback button exists for exactly this.
