Our verdict

This is the battle of the two most photographed beaches in Greece: Zakynthos's Navagio versus Lefkada's Porto Katsiki. Both islands score identically for beaches within a tenth (4.8 vs 4.9); the real difference is what surrounds them.

Zakynthos is the bigger tourism product: Laganas's party strip (4.5 nightlife), turtle-spotting in the marine park, Blue Caves, and a south geared to package holidays — with prices to match (3.5) and some areas best avoided in August. Lefkada is quieter, cheaper to reach (drive across the bridge — no flights needed), windier, and more Greek in feel; its nightlife is a beach bar, not a strip (3.2). Both need a car to reach their famous west coasts.

Choose Zakynthos for the full summer-holiday package — young groups, boat trips, big-resort convenience, and that shipwreck photo. Choose Lefkada for the same calibre of swimming with fewer crowds, lower costs, and the sailing islets next door. Honeymooners actually wanting quiet: Lefkada, clearly.
