Our verdict

They're 35 minutes apart by ferry and aimed at completely different trips. Santorini is the world's honeymoon balcony; Ios is Greece's youth republic that quietly grew up into a real island.

Santorini's caldera is the single most spectacular sight in the Aegean — that's why it scores 4.8 overall despite weak beaches (3.2) and brutal prices (1.0 affordability). You go for the view, the volcano, Akrotiri, and you accept the crowds. Ios inverts all of it: Mylopotas and Manganari are proper golden-sand beaches (4.6), nightlife is the best in the islands (5.0), prices are humane (3.5), and outside the party core the island is surprisingly rural — hiking paths, Homer's supposed tomb, empty south-coast bays.

Choose Santorini for the once-in-a-lifetime view, wine tasting, and romance — 2–3 nights is enough. Choose Ios for swimming, energy, and value over a longer stay. The pairing is natural: Santorini's spectacle first, then Ios to actually relax — ferries run several times daily in season.
