Our verdict
The short answer: Heraklion scores higher β 4.2 to 3.8 β but that gap is almost entirely airport and archaeology, and it hides the more useful truth: Rethymno is the nicer place to actually sleep. Heraklion holds the only perfect 5.0 for culture on this site, for Knossos and the Archaeological Museum, plus a 5.0 for access. Rethymno has the better old town by a clear margin, better beaches (3.8 to 3.5), lower prices, and 34,300 residents against Heraklion's 173,000. Land in one, base yourself in the other.

- Minoan archaeology is the trip. Culture 5.0, the only perfect score here: Knossos on the city edge, Phaistos south, Malia east, and Gortyn's Roman capital with its inscribed law code.
- You want the museum. The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion holds the Minoan collection β bull-leaping frescoes, snake goddesses, the Phaistos disc β and is one of Europe's great museums.
- You are flying. Access 5.0 against 3.5: Heraklion is Greece's second-busiest airport and Rethymno has none of its own.
- You want a working city with real nightlife β 4.7 against 3.8, and 173,000 people who are not there for you.
- You want Kazantzakis's grave on the Martinengo bastion, the Venetian walls and the Morosini fountain.
Choose Rethymno ifβ¦
- You want the better old town, and this is the honest verdict: Rethymno's Venetian-Ottoman core is more intact and far less trampled, with the Fortezza above it, the Rimondi fountain and the Neratze minaret.
- You want to walk out of your room onto sand. Rethymno's town beach runs for kilometres east; Heraklion's own coast is port and industry.
- You want the cheaper base β 3.7 for affordability against 3.5, and the difference in rooms is bigger than that suggests.
- You want Preveli, where a palm-lined river meets the sea at the mouth of the Kourtaliotiko gorge, plus Plakias, Damnoni and Triopetra on the south coast.
- You want the mountain villages: the Amari valley, Spili with its lion-head fountain, and the springs at Argyroupoli.
One thing that applies to every corner of Crete: car reliance scores 5.0 here, the maximum we give. The island is 260 km long, the bus network serves the north coast and little else, and every recommendation on this page assumes you are driving.
Where the 4.2-to-3.8 gap actually comes from
Two categories: access (5.0 against 3.5) and culture (5.0 against 4.5). Strip those out and Rethymno is level or ahead β better beaches, cheaper, quieter, prettier. That matters because access is a one-day problem. You land at Heraklion whatever you do, and Rethymno is 80 km west on a good road, about an hour. Paying an hour once to spend a week somewhere nicer is usually the right trade.
The culture gap is more real but narrower than the numbers imply. Rethymno's 4.5 is earned on a living Venetian town rather than an excavation, plus Arkadi Monastery β the site of the 1866 explosion during the Cretan revolt, which is one of the most emotionally loaded places in modern Greek memory and almost unvisited by foreigners.
What Heraklion genuinely wins
Knossos and the museum, and it is not a close-run thing. Knossos is the largest Minoan palace and the origin of most of what anyone knows about Europe's first literate civilisation. One honest caveat: much of what you walk through is Arthur Evans's early-20th-century reconstruction in painted concrete, and archaeologists have argued about it ever since. The museum in town holds the actual objects and is arguably the better half of the day.
Heraklion also has the better evening. It is a real city with a student population, and the bars behind the old harbour are used by locals rather than staged for visitors.
What Heraklion loses on
The beaches, at 3.5, and the score is fair. The north-coast strip through Hersonissos, Stalis and Malia is package territory, heavily built, and not a reason to travel. The good swimming in this prefecture is south β Matala's cliff caves, Kommos, Agiofarango at the end of a gorge walk β and that is an hour or more from the city.
The honest verdict
For most trips: fly into Heraklion, give it one day for Knossos and the museum while you are still tired, then drive west and base in Rethymno. That gets you the only 5.0 culture score on the site and the better town to come home to. Base in Heraklion itself only if you are there for the archaeology specifically, or you want a city rather than a resort town. And if you have a week, Rethymno is also the better launching point for the Amari valley and the south coast, neither of which works as a day trip from Heraklion.
